Not Hot for Palm Oil

Picture
Palm oil cultivation has been and continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world's most biodiverse forests, replaning native trees with rows and rows of palm trees, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the orangutan, pygmy elephant and sumatran rhino.

Just because people can't be bothered to read the labels and demand a different option.

Why are companies still using palm oil? The usual reason: Because it is cheap.

But is it really cheap?

What is the price all of us are paying for some chips and shampoo?

For the record -- there is no such thing as sustainable palm oil.

How to Tell if Something has Palm Oil

Sneaky brands often disguise palm oil under different names.

Palm oils are anywhere. But if you’d like to avoid it by choosing alternative products which does not contain it, remember a few other alternative names of palm oil. Don’t let them fool you!

INGREDIENTS: Vegetable Oil, Vegetable Fat, Palm Kernel, Palm Kernel Oil, Palm Fruit Oil, Palmate, Palmitate, Palmolein, Glyceryl, Stearate, Stearic Acid, Elaeis Guineensis, Palmitic Acid, Palm Stearine, Palmitoyl Oxostearamide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Kernelate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Lauryl Lactylate/Sulphate, Hydrated Palm Glycerides, Etyl Palmitate, Octyl Palmitate, Palmityl Alcohol

This Means --> CONTAINS Palm oil

If you read the labels of everything carefully, you will find it is almost impossible to avoid palm oil. They are in over 50% packaged products for sale right now. The best option would be to make it illegal -- but since that is probably not going to happen, how about pressure companies to change out of palm oil and into something more sustainable?
Here are five alternatives to palm oil -- they cost a little more, but they are worth it!

1 – Canola Oil - the cheapest and easiest!
2 - Sunflower Oil
3 - Rapeseed Oil
4 – Coconut Oil
5 – Olive Oil
I would be willing to pay a few cents extra per chip bag, so that the environment is protected -- wouldn't you?

Pressure these big companies to
move away from palm oil!
