The Secret of Trees
There is a secret side to using paper and cutting trees down that people usually don't like to talk about.
Everyone knows that trees take away CO2 from the air, right?
A mature tree can remove between 20 and 40 kilos of Carbon from the athmosphere EVERY YEAR. That's a lot!
But what people don't like to talk about is, what happens to this Carbon once the tree is cut down?
Well, first of all, the tree no longer removes the Carbon from the air -- so, every tree cut means an extra 20 to 40 kilos of Carbon which will not be removed from our athmosphere yearly.
But most importantly, when you cut a tree, the Carbon slowly gets released back into the athmosphere. Sometimes not that slowly either -- when you burn the tree for fire or to use as fuel, the Carbon is released almost immediately. So, the benefit from the trees is only a true benefit if we KEEP THEM ON THE GROUND.
Planting new trees to replace the old ones we use may sound like a nice idea, but saplings are able to remove only a fraction of the amount of Carbon that a mature tree can absorb.
While planting new trees is not nearly as efficient as maintaining the ones we have, some companies are doing a great job with reforestation. Ideally we would do both -- keep old growth trees, and replant trees as well.
